Ramon Etxeberria - Rikardo Amondarain
Diemer-Duhm Gambit, Gipuzkoa Team League, Spain 19.4.1997
Analysis by Etxeberria.
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. c4 dxe4 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. f3 Bb4 6. Qa4+ Nc6 7.
a3 Bxc3+ 8. bxc3 h6 9. Qc2 exf3 10. Nxf3 O-O 11. Bd3 b6 12. O-O Bb7
13. Qe2 Re8 14. Ne5 Nxd4
Winning lots of material -- and giving White a strong initiative.
15. cxd4 Qxd4+ 16. Kh1 Qxa1 17. Bb2
Three pawns and the exchange down, White has a superb game!
17... Qa2 18. Rxf6 gxf6 19. Qh5
These are the most important variations after 19. Nd7:
- 19... e5 20. Qg4+ Kh8 21. Qh5 (threatening Qxh6+ and Qh7# or
Nxf6#) Kg7 22. Qf5 (threatening Qh7#) e4 (22... Rh8 23. Qg4#; 22...
Bxg2+ 23. Kg1) 22. Bxf6+ Kg8 23. Qg4+ Kh7 24. Qg7#.
- 19... f5 20. Qe5 and Black must play Qxb2; otherwise White will
checkmate, e.g., 20... f6 21. Nxf6+ Kf7 22. Nxe8 Kxe8
(if Black doesn't take the knight, White can play 23. Nxc7)
23. Qxe6+ Kf8 24. Qxf5+ Ke7 25. Bf6+ Kd6 26. Qe5+ Kd7 27. Bf5+ Kc6
28. Qd5#.
Maybe a computer can be used to check the variations. The
intermediate move Bxg2+ is of no use as White can play Kg1 and
sometimes even Kxg2. After 20... Qxb2 21. Qxb2, I believe that White
must win. Instead of 20. Qe5, White can also play Nf6+ for the
perpetual check.
Other Black's moves are handled in the same way. I haven't analysed
all the lines in much detail, but every time I go over them I finish
with the strong feeling that White must win whatever Black makes. At
least, so far, I haven't found any satisfactory line for Black (I'd
like to know what a strong computer program would move).
19... Re7
The best is 19... fxe5 20. Qxh6 (20. Qxe5 Kf8, and Black's king
runs away)
- 20... f5 (or 20... f6) 21. Qg6+ Kf8 22. Qf6+ Kg8, and 23. Bxe5 is
stopped by 23... Qxg2#. 23. Qxe5 can be tried, but the game seems
better for Black after 23... Qxb2. Therefore, the perpetual check
seems reasonable.
- 20... Qxb2 21. Bh6+ Kh8 22. Bg6+ Kg8 23. Qh7+ Kf8 24. Qxf7#.
- 20... Re7 21. Qh7+ Kf8 23. Qh8#.
- 20... Bxg2+ 21. Kg1 and White wins as the bishop on b2 can be moved.
20. Qxh6 f5 21. Nc6 1-0
